He earns his medical degree from the University of Buenos Aires, School of Medicine and training in Gastroenterology was completed in the Dr. C. Bonorino Udaondo Gastroenterology Hospital where he was Chief of Small bowel Section; Head of Clinical Gastroenterology Service and Head of the Department of Medicine. He is Professor Emeritus of Gastroenterology in the School of Medicine of the University del Salvador in Buenos Aires and Director of the Academic Unit in the University of Buenos Aires Specialization Course. He was Visiting Assistant Professor at the Texas University Health Science Center at Dallas. International expert in celiac disease, he has published numerous scientific papers in the main journals and he has participated in innumerable international events.

He has been President of the Argentine Society of Gastroenterology in the period 2019-2020 and Honorary Secretary of the Pan American Organization of Gastroenterology (OPGE) from 2012 to the present. Dr. Smecuol also served on the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) International Committee from 2016 to today.
